Information sharing improves search and rescue operations

Nautilus is a service that allows you to report the number of persons on board small passenger vessels and more detailed passenger information if necessary. The service seeks to improve the safety and possibilities of rescue of passengers and crew travelling by sea. Information sharing improves search and rescue operations and the follow-up of possible accidents. The information is primarily used by the Finnish Border Guard but also by other parties responsible for water search and rescue operations.

Who must report the number of passengers?

The Finnish Act on Lists of Persons Aboard Passenger Vessels (1038/2009) requires the collection and reporting of passenger information. The Act does not apply to pleasure craft or vessels operating exclusively in port areas.

With certain exceptions, reporting the number of persons on board to Nautilus applies to all small Finnish passenger ships and to foreign passenger ships arriving in or departing from a port in Finland.

More extensive personal information must be reported if the voyage is more than 20 nautical miles from the port.

Personal information does not need to be reported if the vessel operates regular services of less than one hour between port calls in sea area D, sails between two ports or sails from and to the same port without intermediate calls.
